Suit, Heels or Athleisure?
With retailers focusing more energy, attention and designated floor space, Athleisure the fastest growing buzz word in fashion looks set to be a permanent fixture in the fashion landscape. City analysts site it as the biggest source of growth for many of the struggling high-street clothing chains as well as many new players in the fashion market.
Athleisure came about as a fashion trend incorporating a more active, healthier, clean living lifestyle aesthetic into the clothing market. It’s about looking as stylish as you possibly can and bringing your healthy lifestyle passion into your daily life. It integrates sports clothing into daily wear by taking clothing designed for workouts and sports activities and placing them in amongst formal work wear, casual attire and glamorous social occasions.
Designed to be multi-functional but different, using the newest fibres and performance materials Athleisure offers functionality as well as injecting added health benefits such as breathable materials and back aid with the advantage of being quick drying and odour resistant.
It is common perception that the 2007 Chanel catwalk was the watershed moment which launched this game changer by introducing bejewelled trainers and sneaker boots with couture dresses. After a decade of ‘killer heels’ it seemed designers finally came to their senses and flats were the shape of things to come. Lifestyle, yoga and healthy living quickly followed suit.
In 2016 showing an estimated global sales growth of over 42% and with trainers outselling heels, Athleisure the ‘anti-fashion’ trend is not just ‘normal’ it is now considered to be more modern and entirely aspirational.
