Aizak Buyondo Autumn/Winter 2015 style challenge
I have recently been nominated for the ‘Most stylish Ugandan male in the diaspora’ award in one of Africa’s most prestigious fashion awards The Abryanz style and fashion awards (ASFA) 2015 taking place later on in the year in Kampala, Uganda. Although I have always been complimented on my style among the fashion elite, it never occurred to me that it was or could be appreciated or even understood by people outside of the industry let alone from the motherland…..an underestimation on my part. The fact that i have been nominated for this award with my eccentric style goes to show the huge changes in the fashion scene and how the people view fashion and individual style in Uganda.
Life is to short to blend in with the crowd and I have certainly used my personal and individual style to stand out something that I feel still lacks to some extent on the African scene purely because people are afraid of being labelled derogatory terms or afraid to make fashion mistakes. To the latter I say, you will never discover your personal style without experimenting and with that comes a few (or in my case several) faux pas. With each outfit you should be ready to challenge yourself and try out something different. I have been asked numerous what inspires or possesses me to dress the way I do and truth be told my outfits are determined by how I am feeling at that particular moment in time. It is also an interesting and fulfilling game that revolves around reworking some of my old outfits to look totally different to suit my individual style of the day/night.
It may not be to everyone’s taste but as long as I like it, I will hold my head up high, own it and unapologetically work it! My favourite season Autumn here and winter on its way, I set myself a challenge to style some of my favourite pieces from the AW15 collections and see how these pieces will fit in with my personal style and wardrobe. I had to put my individual style on different outfits ranging from formal wear, evening/party outfit, street/urban style to a day casual outfit.
